Creating, penetrating, and/or dominating a niche is not easy. We can all name companies who at one time either created or dominated their market but no longer do so. Think about companies such as Cadillac (GM) in the luxury car niche, Circuit City in electronics and appliance retail stores, and Sony in the mobile music player market, just to name a few. Each of these companies failed to see the changes taking place in the market and/or failed to continually innovate and listen to their clients and prospects. They opened the door for other companies such as: Lexus (Toyota), Best Buy, and Apple and its iPod to penetrate the niches they dominated and replace them as the leader.
